History of the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro

The Kiwanis Club of Statesboro has a rich and impactful history, dating back to its founding on February 29, 1960. The club was established with a mission to serve the community and improve the lives of children and families. Over the years, the club has grown significantly in both membership and scope of activities.

The club’s inception was spearheaded by Joseph Ingram, a Brooklet Kiwanian, who saw the potential for a Kiwanis Club in the larger neighboring town of Statesboro. His efforts, combined with the enthusiasm of local leaders like Wyatt Johnson and Belton Braswell, led to the chartering of the club with 25 members. The initial meetings were held at Mrs. Bryant’s Kitchen, setting the stage for a tradition of community and fellowship.

Throughout the decades, the club has launched numerous initiatives and projects that have left a lasting impact on the Statesboro area. One of the most notable contributions is the annual Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair, which began in 1963. This event has grown to become a staple in the community, attracting thousands of visitors each year and providing significant funds for local charitable activities. The fair not only offers entertainment but also highlights agricultural heritage and local businesses, fostering a sense of community pride.

In addition to the fair, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club has been instrumental in supporting local education through scholarships and the sponsorship of youth programs such as Key Clubs at Statesboro High School and Bulloch Academy. These programs empower young leaders to engage in community service and develop their leadership skills.

The club has also shown a commitment to inclusivity and diversity. In 1989, Sylvia Brown became the first female member, paving the way for future women leaders within the organization. Since then, several women have held key positions, including club president and fair chair, contributing to the club’s dynamic and inclusive culture.

Another significant event hosted by the club is the Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo, started in 2011. Held every April, the rodeo has quickly become a beloved event, featuring bull riding, bronc riding, and various family-friendly activities. Proceeds from the rodeo, like those from the fair, are reinvested into the community, supporting numerous local causes.

The Statesboro Kiwanis Club’s history is marked by a steadfast dedication to service, community, and fellowship. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a cornerstone of the community, the club continues to thrive and expand its reach, embodying the Kiwanis motto: “Serving the Children of the World.”
