The Statesboro Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1960 with 28 members. One of the objectives of the club was community service. One of the club’s early community service projects was to assist deserving students who wanted to further their education beyond the high school level. In fact, one of the first donations made by the club in 1961 was a check for $3,807.67 to support student loans at then Georgia Southern College, whose enrollment had a record high that year of 1,725 students. Soon after, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club began to award scholarships and loans administered by the club’s Scholarship Committee with one of the first awards being the Future Vocational Teacher Scholarship awarded in 1971. On April 7, 1981 the club gave a $2,000 grant to the Georgia Southern Foundation to use for scholarships to students in the School Of Nursing. On September 13, 1984 the Statesboro Kiwanis Club signed an agreement with the Georgia Southern Foundation for the establishment of an endowment for scholarships with a goal of $50,000. The scholarships were to be available to students in all the different Schools and Colleges in the University. With ever increasing costs for books and tuition, the endowment was increased well beyond its original goal and the Foundation now uses the income from the endowment to award $1,500 scholarships to worthy students annually for a number of years. Likewise, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club Scholarship Committee also made an agreement with Ogeechee Technical College to fund scholarships there directly through their Foundation. In addition to those scholarships, the Statesboro Kiwanis Club also awards $2,000 Memorial Scholarships annually directly to worthy graduating high school seniors from our surrounding area. These scholarships are funded through the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair and the Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo to support graduating seniors for any post-secondary education institution. From these scholarships, a large number of deserving area students have benefited from the Statesboro Kiwanis Club since that first scholarship was awarded in 1971.
